More New Docks! 17-inch MacBook Pro Mockup

17-inch MacBook Pro Mockup next to a 13-inch MacBook model
17-inch MacBook Pro Mockup next to a 13" MacBook model.

Seen above is a mockup of the Henge Dock system for the 17-inch MacBook.  The 17-inch model dwarfs the 13-inch unit.  The reason we're calling this a mock-up and not a prototype is because this particular prototype doesn't carry several of the new features we are implementing on the new units. The actual production unit will be slightly taller and will have the set screws flipped to the other side. But progress nonetheless!

Any chance you will create a Henge Dock capable of using the current style magsafe power connectors? You have one pictured on this post. I am planning on getting a new MBPro this year, and it will come with that adapter. In order to use a Henge Dock, I would have to spend $70+ on an older style power adapter, which pretty much rules out me buying a Henge Dock.

ugh!!!! you’re killing me… I can’t wait to get two of these (at a minimum) 1 for work, 1 for home and maybe 1 more for the living room….. I’m more excited about this product then any product I’ve seen. If the iPhone geeks felt this way about the new iPhone, then I finally understand why they waited in line to get their phone. Please HURRY! you’re molder in China should be able to do tooling from scratch in less than 3 weeks (ok 4 if they’re slow) and another 6 weeks to crank out tons of these babies……. did I mention HURRY!!!
I hope you can sell tons of these and make all the pain of starting up a new business/product worth it for yourselves

oh… and hurry! :^)

When will you finally bring the docking stations to the market? Because its taking way to long now and people will run away with the idea and bring it on the market by them self.

Glad to see there’s some progress on these. I really hope we start to see them out and about soon! I just got my new 17" here at work and I’m going INSANE having to plug and unplug power, ethernet, display, usb and audio every time I take my macbook to or from a meeting (which is several times a day!)

Also, i hope you guys are making the stands “wings” a big wider on the 17" to provide additional stability.. LOTS more weight up high on these 17’s vs 13’s… Gonna need a larger footprint on the desk to keep them stable.

Why do the macbooks appear to be reflective? Are they docked with a shell?

They actually just came out of the Apple box and we didn’t bother taking off the protective film they ship them with before we shot the photos.

How do you handle the express card port? I think this is a fantastic product and will definitely buy one, but I want to be able to use an express card eSATA port with it. Is it possible to engineer this dock to accommodate that?

What is taking so long for the 17" version to be available for purchase? I see that you have the 13" up, but not the 15" and 17". Why is this so? The only main difference in the docks is the size, so I don’t understand any reason for the hold-up.

seems like whomever is doing your development and manufacturing is really slow. Something to keep in mind for the future, this project should have gone down much quicker and smoother. I’m still waiting to buy two 17" docks… and I get more and more anxious everyday.
Can you give us an ETA on the 17" models? saying a couple of months isn’t specific enough. You must have a project time line / schedule. Give us your best guess… please :)

Quit inventing new models until you deliver on your previous versions!!!

Until you can deliver on the models you’ve promised already, quit inventing new things we won’t be able to purchase for years (based your current rate of progress on the 15" model release). No one else does anything even close to what you do, otherwise I would have bought another product long agin. Please get the 15" model ready already. Don’t wast any time on thinking up new models, just finish what you’ve already started.

If any of you that are reading this blog are interested, you can order these docking stations from www.protronica.com

They have them in stock at the moment, and have just sold me 6 of them, and they will ship out from them this afternoon. That is better service!!

Here’s what we’ve learned. When we give dates, even if they seem totally attainable, something happens and we get delayed, then people are really disappointed. So we just keep our mouths shut until the docks are in the warehouse so we don’t invoke Murphy’s Law.

From a design standpoint they are very similar, but that’s about the only shortcut when it comes to making new models. We have to build prototypes, then test the units to make sure nothing funky happens with the new computers. Then we go to production, which involves building the tooling for the injection molding process. The tooling just takes a long time to construct and get done correctly, especially on a mold as large as ours. Then we have to produce them, package everything up and shove them into a shipping container from our factory. Then it takes about 4 weeks to ship to the US… its just a long process… too long!

I second that, they show the new adapter in one of their photos I hope they figure out how to integrate it. Especially as the new 27" displays come with a 3in1 cable
